In Cameroon, each smoker spends
averagely the sum of 4691 francs Cfa per month, just on cigarette purchase. Which
is equivalent to 8,9% of the Public Investment Budget(PIB) monthly per inhabitant,
as revealed by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), a survey carried in 2013
by the National Institute of Statistics(NIS) with the support of the Ministry
of Public Health and the World Health Organization.
Thinking of the same source, the
tobacco phenomenon in Cameroon is more likely to be noticed in persons situated
between the age range 25-44 years, where the monthly expenses on cigarette is
not less than 5000 francs Cfa per smoker; mean while those between 15-24 years
are spending about 4123 frans Cfa each month on smoking.
Tobacco use is at a rise, thus
the devastating effects on health are not to be neglected, the Cameroon
Coalition to Counter Tobacco (C3T) is driving for years now advocacy towards
government authorities looking forward to the increase of taxes on this
poisonous product, with end result to reduce its use especially amongst youths
who are more exposed to smoking.
